Ron Hopkinson is a CMOS accredited
consultant in meteorology and has been consulting since 2003. He worked
for the Meteorological Service
of Canada (MSC) for 35 years, first as a weather forecaster and shift supervisor
of a major weather office and then, for 24 years, in the areas of
climatological, meteorological, hydrometeorological and hydrologic
applications. Mr. Hopkinson is the 2003 recipient of the CMOS Andrew Thomson
Prize in Applied Meteorology. He is an active member of CMOS, serving as
national Treasurer from 2006 to 2009 and chair of the Saskatchewan Centre
from 1998 to 2006.
Mr. Hopkinson has an
extensive knowledge of Canada’s
climate archive and observing procedures and specializes in data analysis and
statistics derived from these data. Many of MSC’s former
General Report Programs (GRPs) have been rewritten to run on a PC to provide
a wealth of analytical information for various applications - e.g. GRP215 - snow on the
ground analysis. Other applications such as design wind analyses are available
for any wind reporting station in Canada.
He specializes in hydrometeorological applications such as IDF analysis,
evaporation, 1 to 30 day rainfall analysis (RAIN30), rain storm
analysis and probable maximum precipitation (PMP) studies. Mr. Hopkinson offers
forensic meteorological services to a number of legal firms in Canada.
He is involved in a number
of climatological research projects with Environment Canada’s Climate
Research Division, Science and Technology Branch.
