Postdoctoral fellowship at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada

We invite applications for a one-year (renewable for up to 2 additional years) postdoctoral fellowship to work on project “Modes of Pollution Transport from North America to Nova Scotia and Beyond”, funded under the Canadian Space Agency Earth System Science Data Analysis Program.  http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/sciences/atmosphere-satellites.asp#air-pollution.

The successful candidate will use a combination of satellite- and model-derived atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations to 1) quantify the long-term variability in the relative contribution of different pollution sources (local vs. regional vs. long-range) to air quality in Nova Scotia, 2) isolate the specific synoptic scale meteorological conditions leading to different modes (local, regional and long-range) of pollution events in Nova Scotia and export from North America, and 3) develop a framework for the interpretation of atmospheric composition measurements in Nova Scotia.  Objectives 1) and 2) inform policy regarding jurisdictional (provincial, federal, trans-boundary) pollutant reductions.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold (or complete by August 2017) a PhD in Atmospheric Science or a relevant area of Physics, Chemistry or Engineering.  He or she will have experience manipulating large atmospheric datasets (e.g., generated from model outputs or satellite measurements) and, ideally, have run an atmospheric model (e.g., GEOS-Chem).  Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills, as demonstrated by a successful record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

Application Instructions

The position will remain open until it is filled, however, preference will be given to candidates who apply before May 29, 2017, when applications will begin to be reviewed.  To apply, please email a one-page cover letter, a CV, and the names and contact information of three references to Prof. Aldona Wiacek (aldona.wiacek@smu.ca,http://www.ap.smu.ca/~awiacek/).
