El Ninos are temporary warmings of central and eastern equatorial Pacific upper ocean waters that last up to a year or occasionally longer, and cause marked shifts in global weather and climate patterns.
Although El Ninos tend to occur every few years, their strengths and impacts vary substantially. The current El Nino is exceptional, rivaling the 1997-98 event as the strongest recorded in the modern era. This presentation will review El Nino phenomenology and the observed and predicted development of the great El Nino of 2015-16 and its global and Canadian impacts.

El Nino représente le réchauffement temporaire de l’eau de surface dans les régions centrales et de l’est dans l’océan Pacifique équatoriale. La durée de ce phénomène est généralement limitée à un an, mais quelques épisodes prolongés ont été observés dans le passé. Ce phénomène cause des perturbations dans la circulation atmosphérique globale et a une incidence marquée sur les patrons saisonniers.
Même si la période de retour d’El Nino est habituellement à quelques années, sa force et son incidence peuvent varier substantiellement. L’évènement actuel d’El Nino est exceptionnel, et rivalise avec celui de 1997-98 pour le prix du El Nino le plus fort dans l`histoire récente. Cette présentation donnera l’occasion de revoir la phénoménologie d’El Nino avec un focus sur les observations et prévisions du grand El Nino de 2015-16. Les incidences globales et sur le Canada vont être discutées.
