Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC)

The Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) is a regional climate service centre at the University of Victoria (UVic) that works with users to help them understand the physical impacts of climate variability and change. Our service is growing and thus we have been learning from and helping a widening array of communities and organizations. With support from the BC Climate Action Secretariat, PCIC is developing new relationships with Indigenous audiences, and is therefore seeking to build its internal capacity to weave together Indigenous knowledge and perspectives with climate science knowledge and expertise so that we can better support climate change adaptation in First Nations and Indigenous communities in BC. 

 

Job Description

You will work mainly within the Regional Climate Impacts Team to build PCIC’s capacity to develop climate services for First Nations and Indigenous communities and organizations. In consultation with these users, you will develop information on climate change and its potential impacts, guided by the principles of Two-Eyed Seeing.

 

Reporting to the Lead, Regional Climate Impacts, you will be responsible for assisting in the development and delivery of relevant content, as well as assessing needs and testing content with Indigenous audiences.

 

For this position, we are seeking a qualified applicant with relevant experience in community planning or assessment processes, strong skills in relationship building and a strong desire to work with Indigenous Peoples in BC. The successful applicant will also possess an understanding of climate change, its impacts and climate change adaptation approaches applied in a variety of contexts.

 

Accountabilities

  • Develop relationships with First Nations and Indigenous communities and organizations in BC
  • Collaborate with a variety of knowledge holders and experts to ensure content and tool development occurs from an integrated perspective, with knowledge translation occurring in both directions
  • Lead and participate in special events, workshops and webinars
  • Research, design and write content for Indigenous climate service users that meets their needs
  • Document and track requests, feedback and responses

 

Knowledge & Experience, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge & Experience

We recognize that the successful applicant may come from any combination of education, training and/or experience. Please clearly describe the relation of your previous experience, lived experience and study to the position requirements in your cover letter (or CV).

This position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, work experience and lived experience in areas related to the position and 2 years of relevant experience preferably in community-based planning or education.

  • Education and/or experience in any applied science related to climate change or climate impacts
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering presentations on complex topics
  • Understanding of environmental and climate change, particularly as it impacts Indigenous Peoples and coastal communities
  • Knowledge of cultural protocols, history and cultural values of Indigenous Peoples in BC
  • Direct experience working in or with First Nations or Indigenous communities and organizations is an asset
  • Knowledge translation and mobilization experience is an asset

  • Ability to understand and interpret scientific and statistical data


Other Information

  • This position is funded through an agreement with the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy
  • Employment period: This is an up to 24-month position
  • Full-time (35 working hours per week)
  • Pay rate: $66,971 - $77,637
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • A successful candidate must live in or be willing to move to British Columbia
