Project Ocean
For several years, CMOS has been invited to select a Canadian teacher to participate on Project Ocean (formerly known as Project Maury).

This is a summer workshop for K-12 teachers on oceanographic science topics sponsored by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Presentations at the workshop are made by some of the most respected American scientists in the field of oceanographic sciences. Participants have returned with material, resources and teaching modules readily adaptable to classroom presentations.

The workshop is divided between an on-line distance learning component to be completed in July prior to the in-residence portion and a one-week in-residence component. The in-residence portion of the workshop is to be held at St. Mary's College of Maryland, St. Mary's City, Maryland, 16-22 July 20XX ( NOT BEING OFFERED IN 2024 .)

There are only 24 teachers selected each year, with only 1 from Canada.

The essential workshop expenses for the selected teacher are all paid by AMS, NOAA, CMOS and the Canadian National Committee/Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (CNC/SCOR) .

Because this does not include the travel to and from St. Mary's City, Maryland, CMOS and the CNC/SCOR together also provide a travel subsidy worth CDN$2,000 to the selected Canadian participant.

Previous Canadian participants found their attendance a very rewarding and significant experience.

History of CMOS and Project Ocean
Canadian teachers attended the workshop in 1995 and since 2010.
