Patrick McCarthy is a retired ECCC-MSC meteorologist. He spent most of his career in forecast operations and finished his last eight years as the Head of the Prairie and Arctic Storm Prediction Centre. He graduated from the University of Alberta (BA, BSc. Sp. Meteorology). He has been a member of CMOS for over 25 years. He has been on CMOS Winnipeg Centre’s Executive for much of that time. Pat is also a member of AMS, NWA, the International Commission on the History of Meteorology, and the Community Emergency Advisory Committee for the City of Winnipeg. Pat still found time to write/contribute over 40 papers, articles, preprints and studies and he participated in five field projects.

Pat spent much of his career finding novel and innovative approaches to modernize forecast operations, aided by a fantastic team of likeminded colleagues. In retirement, Pat has many projects that are often related to the history of weather. He is also a storm-chaser and has seen about 40 tornadoes in Canada, the U.S., and Australia. He also contributes his expertise to the University of Manitoba’s for-credit storm chasing course.
